Your taxi fare with 13cabs isn’t going up this week, even as fuel prices climb across Australia. From 30 March, we’re topping up driver earnings by 3% on every App booking nationwide through our parent company, A2B Australia. That’s around $1.20 extra per trip on an average $40 fare, going directly to the Driver at no extra cost to you.
Here’s what’s behind this one-week initiative and what it means every time you book.
Why 13cabs Is Stepping In This Week
Taxi Drivers can’t simply adjust their prices when fuel costs rise. Meter rates in Australia are set by State Governments and can only be changed through a formal regulatory process. So every time fuel prices spike, Drivers absorb the extra cost out of their own earnings.
Rather than leaving Drivers to carry that burden alone, 13cabs stepped in with a direct, short-term response while longer-term solutions are worked through with regulators.
A2B Australia CEO Damien Sheehan explained the thinking behind it.
“Our drivers are feeling the impact of rising fuel prices just as strongly as the communities they serve,” Mr Sheehan said.
“At the same time, we know passengers are already under financial strain. Increasing fares risks reducing demand and ultimately hurting drivers even more.
“This initiative provides immediate, practical support to drivers while keeping fares stable for customers. It is a balanced response that recognises the pressures facing both groups.”
What This Means for You as a Passenger
Booking through the 13cabs App this week puts more money directly into your Driver’s pocket. Your fare stays the same for the duration of this initiative, and the taxi service you rely on remains reliable and consistent.
13cabs Pushes for a Long-Term Fix
The one-week top-up by 13cabs is a short-term measure, not a permanent fix. The deeper problem is that taxi meter rates can’t be changed quickly enough to keep pace with sudden fuel price movements.
That’s why A2B Australia has written directly to Transport Ministers across the country, urging them to act quickly on measures that keep essential transport services running and ease the financial pressure on drivers.
“Our networks play a critical role in keeping Australian cities moving,” Mr Sheehan said.
“Supporting drivers today helps ensure essential transport remains available for passengers tomorrow.”
